The Danube Delta (Delta Dunarii)
— Europe's largest wetlands preserve, is home
to more than 300 migratory and permanent bird species;
160 kinds of fish that include caviar-bearing sturgeon;
800 plant families. Danube Delta covers more than
2,000 sq. miles comprising channels, canals widening
into tree-fringed lakes, reed islands, and pools covered
with water lilies, oak forests intertwined with lianas
and creepers, desert dunes and traditional fishermen
villages.
A variety of eco-tours are available through U.S.
and Romania based tour operators, including cruises
that originate in Germany or Austria and go all the
way down to the Black Sea. When planning a trip to
the Danube Delta it is wise to make arrangements through
a tour operator.
